1000's of national and condition legislators on Thursday were choosing India's next President, a largely ceremonial role expected to visit the regulating Congress Party's former finance minister.
Pranab Mukherjee continues to be traveling the nation for days to shoreline up support one of the 4,896-member Electoral College against his primary competition, opposition candidate and former Parliament speaker Purno Agitok Sangma. Answers are expected Sunday.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress Party chief Sonia Gandhi and Mukherjee waved happily at news cameras because they cast their ballots in New Delhi.
The 76-year-old Mukherjee is a Congress Party stalwart since 1969 along with a key troubleshooter in controlling its fractious coalitions.
At different occasions he's offered as foreign minister, defense minister and finance minister, the second two times. His latest term manipulating the finance portfolio from 2009 was marred by spiraling growth, collapsing currency and rising inflation. India's economic development of 5.3 % within the last quarter was the slowest in nine years.
Many business Presidents were relieved by his resignation recently as finance minister, accusing him for obstructing reforms and undermining foreign investment. The pm, upon taking charge from the ministry, advised finance authorities to "revive your pet spirit" in India's economy, implying that Mukherjee had in some way covered up it.
The brand new President is going to be changing India's first female President, Pratibha Devisingh Patil, whose five-year term finishes on Tuesday.
